EU Intergroup on Sustainable Development - Ship Visit, Antwerp

The Group participated in the “Intergroup on Sustainable Development” visit to the oil tanker “Young Lady” in dry dock in the port of Antwerp on 20 November. The visit was led by Dirk STERCKX (MEP, ALDE), chairman of the “Maritime Affairs” subgroup of the Intergroup. The participants included Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), assistants and representatives of the various maritime industry sectors, namely shipowners, shipbuilders, classification societies, and ship insurers. The Group was represented by Andrew Bardot and John Mace. The aim of the visit was to familiarise MEPs with a typical cargo-carrying ship leading to a better understanding of the various issues that arise from the Third Maritime Safety Package and the recent Communication on “An Integrated Maritime Policy for the European Union”. The visit was followed by a lunch where short statements by industry representatives were delivered, including a short statement from Andrew Bardot on P&I insurance.
