“Hebei Spirit” Master and Chief Officer - Supreme Court Judgement

The International Group has continued to closely monitor developments in relation to the prosecutions in Korea of the Master and Chief Officer of the VLCC “Hebei Spirit” arising out of the oil pollution resulting from the collision of the crane barge Samsung No.1 with the anchored “ Hebei Spirit “ off Taean-gun, Republic of Korea on 7 December 2007. The Group has written to the Korean government following the Supreme Court's judgement on April 23 2009 overturning that part of the decision of the Daejon District Court on which the officers were sentenced to imprisonment. The case has been remanded back to the Daejon District Court for further review. The International Group has expressed its full support for the Master and Chief Officer in their endeavour to seek permission to return to their families in India before returning to Korea to participate in the remaining Daejon District Court proceedings.
