IG - Hong Kong Maritime Awareness Week - Presentation on Chinese Pollution Prevention Regulations
The International Group (represented by Edward Lee of Steamship Mutual) presented a paper at the Joint Conference on Maritime Labour Convention (2006), PRC Marine Pollution and Maritime Security on 26/10/2010 in Hong Kong. The paper, entitled "PRC Marine Pollution Regulation: a P&I; Perspective", referred to the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on the Prevention and Control of Marine Pollution From Ships and placed emphasis on the need for a clear set of implementation rules as soon as possible; called upon the Chinese MSA to consider IG club Letters of Undertaking as an acceptable form of security; and impressed upon shipoweners the importance of not signing any response contracts until the implementation rules were clear and that they would be well advise to consult their clubs before committing themselves to such contracts. The audience was also reminded of the active role taken by the IG in discussions with the Chinese authorities with a view to assisting them to arrive at a set of implementation rules that are both in keeping with the Regulations and practical in terms of compliance. The Conference was organised as part of the Hong Kong Maritime Awareness Week and was well attended by an audience of over 200.
