Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board supports the Group’s P&I Qualification with funding for eligible Hong Kong applicants

Wednesday, 21st May 2025

The Manpower Development Committee of the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board (HKMPB) has recently supported the Group’s P&I Qualification with funding for eligible Hong Kong applicants

The International Group (IG)’s Protection and Indemnity Qualification (P&IQ) course is now available under the pre-approved course and examination list of the Professional Training and Examination Refund Scheme of the Maritime and Aviation Training Fund (MATF) for eligible Hong Kong applicants. Under the MATF training grant 80% of the qualifying participants’ course fees will be refundable subject to a funding cap of HK$30,000 per applicant.

Chris Adie, Chair of the IG Education Committee, commented:

"We are delighted that the MATF supports the upskilling of marine insurance professionals and the development of talent through co-funding local personnel in their pursuit of the P&I Qualification. In the last 12 months, we estimate that around 105 candidates from Hong Kong have taken a P&IQ exam. In addition, 19 candidates from Hong Kong have completed the P&IQ. We hope that the MATF will make it easier for eligible candidates to sign up to take the P&IQ. Our exams are aimed at helping to improve and raise standards in the shipping industry. Topics covered in the P&IQ include an introduction to the shipping industry, People Risks, Cargo Risks, Pollution Risks and Collision, amongst others."

This development follows Mr Nick Shaw, Group CEO’s visit to the Hong Kong Maritime Week in November 2024, where he met with the HKMPB to explore ways to strengthen collaboration and an MOU with the HKMPB was signed on 18 November 2024 under this backdrop.

Eligible candidates can apply for a refund via the MATF application system. A refund can be sought after each of the eight P&IQ modules in turn within four months of passing the module (with proof of completion together with requested documents for application).
