Interim guidance on use of privately contracted armed security personnel on board ships agreed by IMO Maritime Safety meeting

Friday, 20th May 2011

The Group participated in the meeting of the Piracy working group held at the IMO during the MSC meetings at which interim guidance on the employment of privately contracted armed security personnel on board ships transiting the high-risk piracy area off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden and the wider Indian Ocean was approved by the Committee. The guidance is largely based on a draft document prepared by a number of shipowner associations with input from the Group on insurance aspects. In addition to the guidance which will be incorporated in an MSC Circular, the Committee also approved interim recommendations for Flag States in relation to the use of privately contracted armed security personnel on board ships in the high risk area. It is anticipated that both circulars will be issued shortly. (Please see the link below for IMO MSC. briefing note).
