Having recently completed Module 8 of the P&IQ qualification, I’ve found the programme to be an excellent way to gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of the P&I world.
With a background as a shipping lawyer, many of the topics in the later modules were familiar to me. However, the first three modules (P&IQ Certificate) offered a particularly insightful introduction to the history and development of the P&I clubs and why things are done in certain ways. Studying the seven core modules (P&IQ Advanced Certificate) served as an invaluable refresher across the topics, especially for less commonly encountered areas such as salvage and towage. I found the textbooks to be exceptionally well-written, not just comprehensive and detailed, but also full of practical examples. They have not only supported my exam preparation but have also become a reliable reference in my day-to-day handling of claims.
Balancing study time with work commitments can be challenging, and I typically began studying about a month before each exam, starting with a thorough read of the textbooks before moving on to the three mock exams. These mock exams were particularly helpful in familiarising me with the format and focus of the questions, and served as a useful reminder that even the smallest details can be tested. I took 4 years to complete all 8 modules (P&IQ Diploma), usually taking 2 modules at a time.
I highly recommend the P&IQ programme to anyone working in the P&I field. Its structured format and rich content make it a valuable resource whether you’re building a strong foundation or looking to enhance your existing knowledge.
